What is compassion & are we becoming more compassionate?

Our Cuppa and a Chat topic this month is: Compassion

Compassion is a founding principle of Leaves of the World and something we lead with, both as a company and as individuals.

Today we are asking:

What is compassion & are we becoming more compassionate?

"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive."

- Dalai Lama XIV, The Art of Happiness

We believe that in these times, now more than ever, the most important message to share is one of compassion.
Fear and uncertainty certainly have the power to divide people, and if there has been ever been a time in which those two things have been prominent on such a mass scale it is now.
However, on the other side of fear and uncertainty are HOPE and UNITY, two things which we believe define the human race. We are all equal. We are all important. We all have stories to share and gifts to give the world. But the biggest thing of all we can give, is compassion.

So, what defines compassion?

This may seem like an obvious thing to point out here, but being compassionate doesn't just mean understanding something from someone else's position but also embracing and tacking action towards helping others.
According to the Greater Good Magazine these four tributes define someone showing compassion:
  • Bringing attention or awareness to recognizing that there is suffering
  • Feeling emotionally moved by that suffering
  • Wishing there to be relief from that suffering
  • A readiness to take action to relieve that suffering

How important is living with compassion today?

When looking from a world view, significant issues such as plastic pollution, global warming and discrimination are topics which have heavily dominated the headlines.
The perspective could be taken that compassion and indeed awareness of the consequences of our actions on others has been lost.
However, the highlighting of these issues are changing the way we view and embrace compassion.
Issues such as global warming are indeed 'global' and this is the key in the change we are seeing to unite as a human race and change compassion not just to exist within our homes, families and communities; but a compassion which is much further reaching to embrace the entire planet.

Are we living with more compassion?

In an ever-changing landscape, it is heart-warming to see so many conscious businesses launching and growing. Whether their compassion is for the planet, animals or people's health, every company making changes to support and give back are showing compassion.

So as we all become more compassionate beings, towards our planet, our selves and others, we leave you with this parting quote:

"For me, I am driven by two main philosophies: know more today about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you.

- Neil deGrasse Tyson
